Opened just two months before the world changed in early 2020, Electric Cherry has grown into a vibrant hub for vinyl lovers, vintage fashion seekers, and supporters of small-batch, women-led artistry. We chatted with owner, Ally Skiba for this month’s Small Business Spotlight
How long has Electric Cherry been a part of Arvada?
Electric Cherry has been open in Olde Town, Arvada, for a little over five years. Just about sixty days before the pandemic occurred in 2020. It's been quite the journey! Of course, Olde Town, Arvada has much to do with the continual growth of EC. But I'm a firm believer that nothing good comes easy. As a granddaughter of the Great Depression era, I've watched those who have come before me persevere through incredible challenges. It comes as no surprise that I had a few curveballs thrown my way. Five years later, I'm honored to be routinely visited in-store by the vibrant Olde Town community and nationwide travelers many months out of the year. Electric Cherry blossomed from a pure love of music, local art, sustainable fashion, and nostalgia. As an appreciator of many art forms in life, I found it challenging to choose just one facet for EC. This led to the idea of a grassroots lifestyle shop that features locally sourced used vinyl records, slow fashion options, independent small batch goods, and local artisans of all mediums and backgrounds.
2. If someone has never been to your store, how would you describe it?
Ally Skiba, owner of Electric Cherry
Electric Cherry is a funky lifestyle shop. We have a little bit of something for everyone. Whether you're into record collecting, vintage fashion, unique home goods, or supporting local artists, there's a piece of EC that might really draw you in and stick with you. EC is home to over eighty Colorado artisans who have created a diverse original collection in the store. I truly believe the artists make the space come alive. Upon opening the shop, it was really important to me to promote female-owned independent companies as well. Women make all of our handcrafted goods. Some folks come in just for the hilarious greeting cards or the obsession-worthy non-toxic candles. Yes, EC is your local go-to gift shop! When it comes to vinyl, fortunately enough, I have a core community of musical friends within the Arvada community that help me source our used selection. Together, we curate over 25 crates in store, with a focus on first-press, well-kept treasures of all genres!
3. What is the FAVORITE item/line that you carry and why? {just one....! :)}
Vinyl Records will always be the heartbeat of the shop and my true passion. Growing up, I spent much time with my grandparents, who absolutely loved music. It was a staple in their day-to-day lives. You could find my grandma making pierogies in the kitchen on any given day while singing her favorite opera. In the evenings, we would dance the polka in their living room. My grandpa and I would spend Summer days driving to the pool or a park, with Hank Williams on cassette as our adventure soundtrack. For decades, he was also a record pressor for Specialty Records out of Scranton, PA. Focusing on the joy of music feels natural, like I'm at home with family. It's such a cool feeling to share an unspeakable bond with someone over a song, album, or musical era. It's an honor to be able to provide a wide selection of awesome music to the community. We offer Used Vinyl, New Vinyl, CD's, and Cassettes. You'll find turntables, stereos, and vintage speakers for sale through the Vinyl Lounge, our newest addition to the EC studios.
4. Any fun plans or events coming up in 2025 that we should save the date for?
Next month, in late May, you should be able to find an Electric Cherry Vinyl Pop Up Shop at the Bluegrass Bar and Lounge in Olde Town, Arvada, for a special collaboration. We're hopeful we'll have details for the event soon. Monthly, you can stop by Odyssey Beerwerks in Arvada every third Thursday from 5-8pm for Vinyl Night with Electric Cherry! Of course, we can't forget about Second Saturdays in Olde Town, Arvada, either! Electric Cherry will be curating a funky pop-up shop featuring Vinyl Record Discounts, Vintage Clothing, Small Batch Goods, and Art Prints each month down by the Main Stage on Grandview Ave for the May, June, and July Second Saturday Festival.
5. What do you love most about owning a small business in Arvada?
Gosh, owning a small business has taught me countless lessons thus far. It's also opened so many doors I didn't realize were open to me. The power of putting yourself out there and embracing what's to come allows for so much opportunity to grow. I've found an incredible amount of support bonding with fellow female entrepreneurs over the past couple of years. Olde Town, Arvada has so many wonderful female-powered businesses! Even after a couple of years, I find myself in awe that I get to sit at the table with the Board of Directors of the Business Improvement District. Working with minds of that caliber is endlessly inspiring! Getting to know the community is truly the gift of small business!
